Marcus David, guitarist, singer, songwriter and all-around recording guru continues his musical journey with a solo project in which he expands and redefines his musical boundaries.
Based in Atlanta, Marcus previously fronted bands Black Stone Kings (2011-2013) and Big Murder (2015-2022), and has his hand in a range of side projects, including working the boards at his own recording studio, Pink Bus Productions.
All of Marcus’ projects showcase the breadth of his musical styles – in Black Stone Kings’ work we hear influences from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, through to Foo Fighters, The Offspring, and Counting Crows.
Big Murder released their debut album, Shifting Ground in July 2016, and on the back of it the band played several local shows and festivals and made appearances on Atlanta radio station 99X.
Their sophomore effort, Slow Moving Planet, ranges in style from the straight-up guitar-driven hard rock of “Barking at the Gods”, through “Want this Now” (a mash-up of Living Colour and Foo Fighters), the heartfelt ballad “If You Leave.”, and ends with the rousing Led Zeppelin-meets-Rage Against the Machine-style “Political Correction.”
Released in 2020, the EP No Small Plans offers an interesting spin on human relationships, woven into a spectrum of musical styles, ranging from the rocking anthem "In My Head" (evoking Queens of the Stone Age) to the nostalgic, dream-like "Swarm." This record showcases the breadth of David’s influences, with multiple vocal styles alongside superb all-around musicianship.
Big Murder’s final release in 2022, the single “Hear My Cry”, evokes a powerful mixture of 80s indie and 90s power pop. In some ways this presages the direction of David’s new solo material.
While still showcasing his and his guest contributors’ prodigious talents, Marcus puts the emphasis on evoking various emotions or reactions through rhythm and melody. “Music must make you move, dance, cry, smash something, chill, or flail around; otherwise it's just random sound waves.”
Marcus says that “Everything I do…I do to get me closer to the stage - performing my music on a stage to a happy audience is my ultimate goal in life!”
Look out for new material and live performances in early 2025!
